Galloping on a rain-affected soft to heavy No. 4 grass, Eluid caught the eye with an outstanding piece of work ahead of his Te Rapa assignment on Saturday. The Tony Pike-trained galloper, who recently impressed when finishing a close second at the Avondale trials, stretched out stylishly to stop the clock at a slick 37.9 for his final 600 metres.
Other members of the Pike team also pleased on the grass. Astoria Brooke, who heads to Saturday's open mile at Te Rapa, worked home comfortably in 40.0, while Deep Pursuit, set to contest the Rating 65 1200 metres, returned 39.9. Cannon Hill completed his work in 40.2.
Excite produced one of the sharper gallops of the morning, recording 1:08.3 for 1000 metres with a smart 37.8 final 600 metres. Five-time winner Arabian Songbird looked in excellent order, running 1:09.8 for the 1000 metres and 38.2 for her final sectional. Rounding out the grass workers, promising Too Darn Hot filly Shore Breeze, a trial winner, impressed with a fluent 38.9.
The sand tracks were exceptionally busy throughout the morning. Unbeaten six-time winner Well Written was first to step out, travelling strongly under a hold to record 40.7. Multiple Group One winner El Vencedor continued preparations for his new campaign with a comfortable 41.9, while impressive recent trial winner Media World looked particularly sharp, working home under a tight hold in 41.7.
Stablemate Tardelli continued his solid preparation with 40.9, while multiple stakes-performed Little Black Dress was never asked for a serious effort, returning 43.0. Lightly raced Savabeel mare Khaleesi impressed with 40.1, Mulan Ardeche recorded 41.7, and last season's Hawke's Bay Guineas winner Magic Carpet cruised home in an easy 44.1. Emerging stayer Fastdeeldun also worked comfortably, returning 43.3.
Friday's Cambridge Synthetic contenders were well represented. Allthekingshorses travelled kindly to post 41.7, while last-start synthetic winner Confectionist worked quietly in 42.1. Kahului looked in excellent order recording 40.5, and Frankel colt Hebridean Way, another Friday starter, was smart with 40.2.
Also heading to Friday's meeting, Dare You was nicely held in 41.9, while Andrew Forsman's Berry Brown, who contests Race 2, looked particularly well with a slick 39.9. Race rival La Cadiere, from the Ben and Ryan Foote stable, paired with Rosina, the duo matching strides over 1000 metres in 1:06.9, finishing off with a sharp 36.9 final 600 metres. Pink Gin was another to work well in 39.9, while last-start synthetic winner Pineleaf was kept to a comfortable 41.0.
The Forsman stable continued to produce several eye-catching gallops, headed by multiple stakes performer Mary Shan, who impressed running home in 38.9. Stablemates Zanzibar (39.1), Tomahawk (40.2), Show Your Ace (39.7) and Madamanzor (41.1) all worked pleasingly.
From the James and Wellwood team, Group One-winning mare She's A Dealer looked to be coming to hand nicely for the spring, producing one of the fastest sectionals of the morning with 37.5. Promising stablemate The Precursor also worked attractively in 38.7.
Simon Rees paired So Be It and So Like Zee, with the pair finishing strongly together in 38.9.
Tony Pike also sent out several more runners, with Hathaway and Want More working together in 40.2, while Quantum Elixer and Quantum Dragon matched strides in 40.1. Dragon's Gift and The Sancy completed similarly pleasing work, recording 39.9.
To round out the morning, unbeaten hurdler My Maebelline Girl stretched out over 1200 metres on her second round, finishing off strongly with a final 40.9, suggesting she has returned in excellent order.
